In the vibrant tapestry of Chicago's illustrious skyline and its eclectic neighborhoods, my mother, Deverra Beverly's legacy unfolds—a narrative rich with dedication, foresight, and a relentless pursuit of justice for the underserved. Through my eyes, her story emerges, chronicling her unwavering commitment to public housing and community activism, a dedication recognized by both the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and the National Public Housing Museum.
Her journey wasn't just a career; it was a calling, deeply rooted in a conviction to ensure justice and equality for everyone. Appointed as a commissioner by the Mayor, she was charged with the vital mission of representing public housing residents, a challenge she accepted with tenacity and zeal. Her work with the City’s Department of Human Services further highlighted her undying commitment to bettering the lives of our community's most vulnerable, offering them not just support, but a powerful advocate.
As the Founding Chair of the National Public Housing Museum, she embarked on a pioneering mission to capture and preserve the complex history and stories of public housing residents. This initiative was more than just a project; it was a crusade to protect our shared history, ensuring the trials and triumphs of public housing residents would serve as a beacon for generations to come.
The tributes from the CHA upon her passing, though deeply moving, resonated with the deep bond and reciprocal respect that was shared. Her journey from grassroots leadership at ABLA Homes to impactful policy making as a CHA commissioner was always guided by a profound connection to the communities she served, always keeping an eye on the necessary systemic reforms.
Her legacy, deeply interwoven with Chicago’s narrative, stands as a testament to hope and a reminder of the unstoppable power of a voice unyielding.
